Manage organizations using the Neon API

Summary: Neon Organization API endpoints for managing org API keys, members, invitations, and project transfers. Organization API keys are auto-scoped to the org; personal API keys require an explicit org_id parameter. Some operations, including creating invitations, removing members, and transferring projects, require a personal admin key and reject organization API keys. A permission matrix maps each endpoint to its supported key type.

Learn how to manage Neon Organizations using the Neon API, including managing organization API keys, working with organization members, and handling member invitations.

You can authorize your API requests using either of these methods:

  • Organization API key: Automatically scopes all requests to your organization
  • Personal API key: Requires including an org_id parameter to specify which organization you're working with

The key difference is in how you structure your API requests. Here's an example of listing projects using both methods:

Using an organization API key:

Bash
curl --request GET \
     --url 'https://console.neon.tech/api/v2/projects' \
     --header 'authorization: Bearer $ORG_API_KEY'

Using a personal API key:

Bash
curl --request GET \
     --url 'https://console.neon.tech/api/v2/projects?org_id=org-example-12345678' \
     --header 'authorization: Bearer $PERSONAL_API_KEY'

Both examples retrieve a list of projects, but notice how the personal API key request includes org_id=org-example-12345678 to specify which organization's projects to list. With an organization API key, this parameter isn't needed because the key itself is already tied to a specific organization.

Some operations require a personal API key from an organization admin and cannot be performed using organization API keys. These operations are marked with ❌ in the matrix below.

To find your organization's org_id, navigate to your Organization's Settings page, where you'll find it under the General information section. Copy and use this ID in your API requests.

finding your organization ID from the settings page

There are two types of organization API keys:

  • Organization API keys: Provide admin-level access to all organization resources, including projects, members, and settings. Only organization Admins can create these keys.
  • Project-scoped organization API keys: Provide Editor access to a single project within the organization, so they can read and modify project resources but can't delete the project or manage who can access it. Only organization Admins can create these keys.

If you're an Editor, Viewer, or Collaborator, create a personal API key instead; it's scoped to your own access.

The key token is only displayed once at creation time. Copy it immediately and store it securely. If lost, you'll need to revoke the key and create a new one. For detailed instructions, see Manage API Keys.

Organization API key creation (POST /organizations/{org_id}/api_keys) is rate limited to 10 requests per second. If you create keys in bulk, throttle your requests or use retries with backoff.

Try in API Reference

Lists all API keys for your organization. The response does not include the actual key tokens, as these are only provided when creating a new key.

     --header 'authorization: Bearer $PERSONAL_API_KEY' | jq

Retrieves a paginated list of members for the specified organization. Each entry includes the member ID, user ID, organization role, join date, and the user's email. Member objects may include optional has_mfa and deactivated_at fields.

  • has_mfa: Whether the member has TOTP (2FA) enabled.
  • deactivated_at: Timestamp indicating the member account is deactivated.

You can sort by email, role, or joined_at (default), set sort_order to asc or desc, and use limit (1–500) to control page size. Use the cursor from the response pagination.next to fetch the next page.

Example: list members with sorting and pagination

Bash
curl --request GET \
     --url 'https://console.neon.tech/api/v2/organizations/{org_id}/members?limit=20&sort_by=joined_at&sort_order=desc' \
     --header 'accept: application/json' \
     --header 'authorization: Bearer $ORG_API_KEY' | jq

Example: next page (using cursor from previous response)

Bash
curl --request GET \
     --url 'https://console.neon.tech/api/v2/organizations/{org_id}/members?limit=20&sort_by=joined_at&sort_order=desc&cursor=eyJtZW1iZXJfaWQiOi...' \
     --header 'accept: application/json' \

Changes a member's current role in the organization. If using your personal API key, you need to be an admin in the organization to perform this action. Note: you cannot downgrade the role of the organization's only admin.

Valid roles are admin, editor, viewer, and collaborator. The value member is still accepted as a legacy alias for editor. A member's organization role sets their baseline access on every project; to change their access on a single project, see Manage project access.

Bash
curl --request PATCH \
     --url 'https://console.neon.tech/api/v2/organizations/members/{member_id}' \
     --header 'accept: application/json' \
     --header 'authorization: Bearer $ORG_API_KEY' \
     --header 'content-type: application/json' \
     --data '{"role": "editor"}' | jq

Example response:

JSON
{
  "id": "abc123de-4567-8fab-9012-3cdef4567890",
  "user_id": "def456gh-7890-1abc-2def-3ghi4567890j",
  "org_id": "org-example-12345678",

You must use your personal API key and have admin-level permissions in the organization to use this endpoint. Organization API keys are not supported.

Bash
curl --request DELETE \
     --url 'https://console.neon.tech/api/v2/organizations/{org_id}/members/{member_id}' \
     --header 'accept: application/json' \
     --header 'authorization: Bearer $PERSONAL_API_KEY'

Try in API Reference

     --header 'accept: application/json' \
     --header 'authorization: Bearer $ORG_API_KEY' | jq

Example response:

      "invited_at": "2024-01-01T12:00:00Z",
      "role": "editor"
    }
  ]
}

Try in API Reference

Creates invitations for new organization members. Specify the organization role each invited user should get (admin, editor, viewer, or collaborator). Each invited user:

  • Receives an email notification about the invitation
  • If they have an existing Neon account, they automatically join with the role you specified
  • If they don't have an account yet, the email invites them to create one

You must use your personal API key and have admin-level permissions in the organization to use this endpoint. Organization API keys are not supported.

Bash
curl --request POST \
     --url 'https://console.neon.tech/api/v2/organizations/{org_id}/invitations' \
     --header 'accept: application/json' \
     --header 'authorization: Bearer $PERSONAL_API_KEY' \
     --header 'content-type: application/json' \
     --data '{
       "invitations": [
         {
           "email": "user@example.com",
           "role": "editor"
         }
       ]
     }' | jq

The API supports transferring projects between organizations. For detailed instructions and examples, see Transfer projects to an organization.

Key requirements:

  • Must use a personal API key
  • Requires Admin in the source organization, and a role that can create projects in the target (Admin, Editor, or Viewer)

Try in API Reference

For organizations on the new permissions model, you can list project members and set or remove a member's project role through the API. See Manage project access with the API for endpoints and examples.
